Supporting Social and Emotional Development Across Childhood
Parents and teachers are essential to children’s social and emotional growth because they provide guidance, support, and knowledge that help children develop into healthy adults. Social emotional learning, also known as SEL, is the process of helping children understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible choices, and develop self-control. This website explores important developmental milestones and self-regulation strategies that support children’s growth.
SEL is important for educators because it helps create a safe, caring, and supportive classroom environment. SEL supports relationships, behavior, self-regulation, learning, and emotional well-being. Teachers can support SEL in the classroom by modeling positive behaviors, teaching coping strategies, encouraging kindness, and helping children express their emotions in healthy ways. Families can also support SEL at home by using consistent routines, talking about feelings, practicing problem-solving, and encouraging positive relationships.
